Romania reports surge in company insolvencies, with agriculture hit hardest

In the first half of 2026, the number of firms entering insolvency in Romania rose to 3,855, a 12.36% increase over the same period last year. The National Trade Register Office recorded 709 new insolvencies in June alone. In Argeș County, 76 firms became insolvent between January and June, a 13.64% decline from the previous year, with 13 cases reported in June.

The agricultural sector saw an even sharper rise, with insolvencies up about 80% compared with the first half of 2025. Analysts attribute the jump to higher energy and fertilizer prices and heightened competition from grain imports from Ukraine, putting additional pressure on Romanian farm businesses.
