Romania keeps investment‑grade rating as Moody’s confirms Baa3
Moody’s confirmed on 7 August 2026 that Romania’s sovereign rating remains at Baa3, the lowest tier of the investment‑grade category, and kept a negative outlook. The agency highlighted that the country reduced its budget deficit faster than expected, helping to curb the rise of public debt and interest‑costs, but warned that political fragmentation and implementation risks keep the outlook negative.
President Nicușor Dan welcomed the decision, noting that the rating reflects the joint effort of institutions, citizens and the business environment, while stressing that “the perspective remains reserved”. Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare called the outcome a short‑term “breathing space” of about five weeks before the next rating review by S&P Global Ratings on 2 October 2026, and urged continued fiscal consolidation. Economic analyst Adrian Negrescu described the verdict as “a breath of oxygen” for the economy but cautioned that the negative outlook signals a higher probability of a downgrade within the next 12‑24 months if reforms stall.
