Romania risks losing €800 million EU funds over parliamentary integrity‑law vote

The Romanian Senate is set to vote on the Integrity Law, a measure tied to the disbursement of nearly €800 million from the EU‑backed National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). Social Democratic Party (PSD) deputy‑group leader Ştefan Ovidiu Popa alleges that the National Liberal Party (PNL) and the Save Romania Union (USR) have refused to support the law, while the Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR) abstained. If the law fails to pass, the country could forfeit the allocated EU funds, jeopardising projects in infrastructure, health, education and other sectors.

The dispute highlights the tension between party politics and national financial interests, with PSD claiming its vote aims to protect Romania’s access to the EU money. Opposing parties have not publicly explained their positions, prompting criticism that political maneuvering is endangering critical public‑investment resources.
