Romania road disruptions: Transfăgărășan snow and bridge collapse

Romania is experiencing significant road disruptions due to severe weather and infrastructure failure. On the Transfăgărășan highway, heavy snowfall has necessitated intervention by road crews using two vehicles and over 5 tons of salt to clear the roadway. Authorities warn that winter conditions persist, particularly in the alpine area near Bâlea Lac, and advise drivers to check traffic conditions before traveling.

In Bacău County, a metal bridge over the Trotuș River at Ciobănuș collapsed while being crossed by a heavy truck. The incident occurred on DN 12A after the vehicle reportedly failed to respect weight and height restrictions. While the driver escaped without injury, heavy traffic is blocked, and light vehicles are being diverted to local routes under police supervision. DRDP Iași stated that the bridge will require demolition and reconstruction, noting that a feasibility study and tender process for a new bridge are already underway.
