Romania road tax changes may increase consumer prices by 10%

The implementation of the new TollRo road taxation system in Romania is expected to increase the cost of transporting goods, potentially leading to a price hike of up to 10% for consumers within a month. Unlike the previous vignette system, the new method calculates fees based on the actual distance traveled and specific vehicle characteristics.

Transport companies warn that these additional costs will likely be passed on to the final consumer. Low-value goods with high volume or weight, such as water and food, are expected to be more heavily impacted than expensive items.

Industry analysis indicates that the new system requires much more precise route planning. While highway fees are set at 0.48 lei/km and national road fees at 0.24 lei/km for Euro VI vehicles over 12 tons, a route with lower road taxes may actually become more expensive if it results in higher fuel consumption or longer transit times. Fuel remains a critical factor, accounting for approximately 35% to 40% of total transport costs.
