Romania school population reaches 3.5 million in 2025‑2026

The National Institute of Statistics reported that Romania’s school population for the 2025‑2026 academic year totaled 3,518.7 thousand students, an increase of 33.1 thousand from the previous year. Primary and secondary education accounted for 45 % of pupils, while secondary schools (lyceums) made up 17.9 % and higher education 16.5 %.

The teaching workforce numbered 247.5 thousand, giving an average pupil‑to‑teacher ratio of 14 to 1. Female students comprised 50.2 % of the total, and 73.6 % attended schools in urban areas. Higher education enrolment reached 580.9 thousand, with women representing 55.4 % of students. The most popular fields were business, administration and law (23.9 %) and engineering, processing and construction (19.9 %). The highest regional student numbers were recorded in the Nord‑East region (588.5 thousand) and the Bucharest‑Ilfov area (556.1 thousand). Public institutions served 94.4 % of all students.
