Romania school uniform bill amendment proposes student voting rights
Romanian Senator Daniel Zamfir, an initiator of the bill to mandate school uniforms, has proposed an amendment that would allow students to have a vote in determining their school attire. This follows meetings between Zamfir and representatives from the National Council of Students and various parent associations.
The proposal comes after widespread student protests, where many students wore black clothing to signal their opposition to the mandate. Students have argued that mandatory uniforms do not address the fundamental issues within the Romanian education system.
The bill was previously adopted by the Senate on September 21 and is now moving toward a vote in the Chamber of Deputies, which serves as the deciding house. Zamfir noted that recent discussions with student and parent representatives were more productive than expected, suggesting that previous levels of conflict may have been artificially heightened.
