Romania sees public distrust over defence contracts and growing demand for early elections

A barometer survey conducted by Avangarde in late July shows that a majority of Romanians distrust the way EU‑funded SAFE money is being spent. Fifty‑three percent oppose the €5.7 billion contract awarded without public tender to German defence firm Rheinmetall, while 58 % favour competitive bidding from multiple suppliers. Forty‑three percent believe the purchases serve the interests of companies rather than Romania’s strategic needs, and 62 % want the funds to support the domestic defence industry even if deliveries take longer.

A separate poll taken at the same time reveals that, after 86 days without a fully empowered government, 49 % of respondents support holding early parliamentary elections, while 39 % reject the idea. The political deadlock began with the dismissal of Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan’s cabinet on 5 May and subsequent failed attempts by President Nicușor Dan to form a new executive. President Dan has publicly opposed early elections, but public appetite for a snap vote is growing.
