Romania sees rise in foreign worker family reunification requests

Foreign workers in Romania are increasingly seeking to bring their families to the country, citing lower living costs compared to nations like Italy or Germany. Data from the General Inspectorate for Immigration indicates that family reunification requests have doubled in certain counties in recent years.

Approximately 180,000 non-EU citizens currently hold active work contracts in Romania. Significant numbers of applicants originate from Nepal, Sri Lanka, India, Turkey, and China. To qualify for reunification, applicants must demonstrate sufficient legal income to support all family members and provide proof of adequate housing through a legalized rental contract or property deed.

The influx of foreign labor has sparked domestic debate regarding demographic shifts and economic impact. While many workers find better financial prospects in Romania, some citizens have expressed concerns regarding the integration of low-skilled workers and the perceived lack of transparency regarding legal caps on foreign labor.
