Romania sees rise in return migration amid growing domestic wages

An increasing number of Romanian citizens are choosing to return to their home country after spending decades abroad. This shift is driven largely by significant wage growth within Romania. While the average monthly salary in Romania was approximately 300 euros in 2013, it has since risen to over 1,000 euros, narrowing the economic gap with some Western European nations.

Data indicates that interest in working abroad has reached its lowest level in ten years. Since the beginning of the year, only 55,000 Romanians have applied for jobs in foreign countries, a figure representing a one-third decrease from last year and a 50% drop compared to three or four years ago. While seasonal work in Northern European countries like Sweden remains lucrative, many citizens find the rising cost of living in the West and the improved domestic economic situation more appealing.

Personal accounts highlight a complex landscape of migration. While some long-term emigrants in countries like Norway and Spain express regret for not leaving sooner due to professional advancement and stability, others are actively planning their return, citing a sense that domestic conditions are improving.
