Romania records 88,000 foreign scholarship applications, a 19‑fold rise
Interim foreign minister Oana Țoiu announced that 88,795 young people from more than 150 countries and five continents applied for Romanian government scholarships in 2026, a figure 19 times higher than four years earlier. The applications represent a record surge, with the highest numbers coming from Pakistan (14,515), Afghanistan (8,956) and Bangladesh (8,916), followed by Nigeria, Syria and other nations.
The ministry said that after inter‑institutional validation the final results will be disclosed, and 245 selected candidates will study at university centres across Romania on fully funded scholarships. Țoiu highlighted the scholarships as an investment that builds long‑term connections between Romania and the students’ home countries.
