Romania Senate adopts subsidy for small-scale pig farmers

The Romanian Senate has approved a legislative proposal to provide financial support to small-scale pig farmers and households. The measure aims to prevent the spread of African swine fever by helping producers comply with biosecurity regulations and maintain safer rearing conditions.

Under the proposed law, eligible recipients could receive 20 euros per animal. For individual households, the subsidy is capped at a maximum of five pigs, resulting in a potential total of 100 euros. For small commercial farms registered with sanitary-veterinary authorities, the limit is set at 50 animals, allowing for a maximum subsidy of 1,000 euros.

To qualify, farmers must have their animals and holdings registered in the National Database (BND) and demonstrate compliance with biosecurity standards through sanitary-veterinary inspections. The initiative, proposed by former Agriculture Minister Tanczos Barna, must now be adopted by the Chamber of Deputies to become law.
