Romania Senate commission adopts draft law for mandatory school uniforms

The Education Commission of the Romanian Senate has adopted a draft law that would make school uniforms mandatory for students in state pre-university education. The legislative project is currently under debate in the upper house of Parliament.

Senator Cristian Resmeriță, one of the initiators and supporters of the bill, stated that uniforms could help reduce visible social differences among children and create a safer, more equitable school environment. He emphasized that competition among students should focus on knowledge and skills rather than the clothing their parents can afford.

While current Romanian law requires students to wear decent and appropriate clothing according to school regulations, these provisions are frequently ignored. The proposed law would formalize the requirement, though it does not mandate a single uniform model for the entire country.
