Romania Senate extends ban on Russian software until 2035

The Romanian Senate has adopted a draft law to extend the prohibition on the acquisition, installation, and use of software products and services originating from the Russian Federation in public institutions until December 31, 2035.

The measure, which passed with 104 votes in favor and one against, seeks to extend the restrictions currently set to expire at the end of 2026. The legislation aims to prevent Russian-controlled cybersecurity products from entering the state's IT infrastructure, citing the ongoing war in Ukraine and the necessity of protecting critical infrastructure from hybrid threats and cyberattacks.

The ban covers various categories, including antivirus applications, anti-malware solutions, firewalls, VPN services, and other security software for devices and web applications. The project, initiated by several political groups and Deputy Sebastian Burduja, must now move to the Chamber of Deputies for a final decision.
