Romania Senate rejects limit on academic chair reservations
The Romanian Senate has definitively rejected a legislative proposal by the USR party that sought to limit the duration for which professors can reserve their academic chairs while holding public office. The rejected initiative, proposed by senators Ștefan Pălărie and Remus Negoi, would have capped these reservations at five consecutive years, after which the individual would have to choose between their teaching position and their public role.
The vote to reject the bill resulted in 85 votes against, 16 against rejection, and 4 abstentions, with senators from the PSD and AUR parties voting against the limit. Consequently, professors who enter Parliament or the Government can continue to reserve their positions indefinitely.
Proponents of the limit, including Senator Pălărie, argued that the current system allows political figures to block teaching positions for decades without performing didactic duties, making it difficult for early-career teachers to find stable employment. Critics of the current practice cited high-profile examples, such as Klaus Iohannis and Crin Antonescu, to illustrate how academic posts can remain unavailable for long periods.
