Romania faces shrinking workforce and demographic decline
Romania is facing significant demographic and economic shifts. Data from the National Institute of Statistics shows the civilian employed population shrank by one million people between 2008 and 2024, falling from 8.7 million to 7.7 million. While the number of formal wage earners rose from 5.2 million to 5.8 million, there was a sharp decline in unpaid family workers and self-employed individuals.
Demographic trends also indicate a continuous population decline. In June, birth certificates recorded nearly 11,800 compared to over 19,000 death certificates, continuing a trend of negative natural growth seen for over three decades.
In the agricultural sector, APIA has released a new payment tranche exceeding 1.44 million lei for 1,148 agricultural renters and 47 heirs. Additionally, new state aid for pig and cattle farmers will be available starting September 1, 2026, to mitigate rising costs.
Separately, reports indicate that ROMATSA has paid approximately 20 million euros in retirement bonuses to 96 employees over the last two and a half years, with one individual receiving a record bonus of 532,000 euros.
