Romania updates driving license procedures and EU sanction alignment

Romania is implementing administrative changes regarding driving licenses to reduce bureaucracy and align with upcoming European Union standards.

Under new procedures established by the General Directorate for Driving Licenses and Vehicle Registration (DGPCI), applicants for a driving license are no longer required to submit a criminal record certificate, whether in paper or electronic format. Instead, officials will verify a candidate's legal status directly through accessible databases, provided the applicant gives their consent. This measure aims to speed up application processing and eliminate unnecessary steps for candidates.

Additionally, by 2030, Romania must comply with new EU norms regarding driving sanctions. This will ensure that the suspension or revocation of a driving license in one EU member state is recognized and applied across all member countries. These measures will specifically target serious offenses, such as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, excessive speeding, or accidents resulting in death or injury.
