OMV Petrom advances 560-million-euro sustainable fuel project
Romania is seeing significant developments in its energy sector, highlighted by OMV Petrom’s 560-million-euro investment at the Petrobrazi refinery. The project aims to build a unit capable of producing 250,000 metric tons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel (HVO) per year by 2028. The facility will utilize renewable feedstocks like vegetable oils and used cooking oil, combined with green hydrogen, to reduce lifecycle emissions by at least 65%.
In terms of policy, Environment Minister Diana Buzoianu announced a 400-million-lei program for photovoltaic battery storage, intended to stabilize energy prices and support prosumers. While the program is expected to launch this year, initial installations are projected for 2027.
Additionally, Critical Metals Corp has estimated that its proposed rare metals refinery in Romania could generate annual revenues between 1.8 and 2.2 billion dollars. The facility is designed to process up to 100,000 tons of eudialite concentrate annually. Meanwhile, local energy markets are experiencing fluctuations, with recent reports noting price increases for diesel at major stations like Petrom and OMV.
