Romania sports federations could receive millions from betting tax
A legislative proposal in the Romanian Parliament aims to mandate that sports betting operators redirect 1% of their gross revenue to national sports federations. The revenue is calculated as the difference between the total amount wagered and the winnings paid out to bettors.
These funds would be designated exclusively for the development of youth sports, including the support of children and junior sectors, clubs, and competitions. The contribution would apply to all sporting events wagered on within Romania, regardless of whether the competitions are national or international.
The initiative, introduced by Deputy Ciprian Paraschiv and several colleagues, seeks to amend existing laws regarding physical education, sports, and gambling operations. Because the funds are redirected from betting operators, the project is designed to support sports development without impacting the state budget.
