Romania: The 1944 coup by King Michael I against Ion Antonescu

On August 23, 1944, Romania underwent a decisive political shift when King Michael I deposed and arrested Marshal Ion Antonescu. This action ended Romania's alliance with Nazi Germany and the Axis powers, transitioning the country to the side of the Allies, including the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

In the weeks preceding the coup, Antonescu had been in Băile Olănești for medical treatment. During this time, he received an invitation from Adolf Hitler to meet in Germany and engaged in discussions regarding a potential armistice. However, following Antonescu's refusal to immediately cease hostilities against the Allies, the King took decisive action.

The coup took place at 'Casa Mică', a private residence of the King located behind the Royal Palace. While the decision significantly shortened World War II by shifting the Eastern Front, historians note the complex aftermath, as the country subsequently faced Soviet occupation and the rise of communist influence.
