Romania tipping debate intensifies over service pressure

A debate regarding tipping customs and the pressure to provide gratuities has emerged among consumers in Romania. Discussions on social media platforms like Reddit and Facebook highlight a divide between those who view tipping as a voluntary reward for exceptional service and those who feel it is becoming an implicit obligation.

One specific incident in Bucharest's Old Town sparked significant controversy after a customer reported being charged a tip of 23.8 lei despite explicitly stating they would not be leaving one. The customer noted that the amount was added to the POS terminal and was only refunded after they threatened to involve the police.

Public opinion remains split. Some argue that tipping should only be reserved for remarkable service, noting that employees already receive a salary for their work. Others have expressed concern over the increasing presence of tipping prompts in casual dining establishments, such as kebab shops, and the perceived social pressure to comply with these requests.
