Romania faces influenza vaccine shortages in pharmacies

Pharmacies across Romania are reporting shortages of injectable influenza vaccines, specifically Vaxigrip and Influvac, as high demand has exhausted initial September stocks. While some pharmacies report nearly empty shelves, the Ministry of Health states that sufficient supplies remain for intranasal vaccines for children (Fluenz) and high-dose vaccines for those over 60 (Efluelda).

To address the shortage, the Ministry of Health and the National Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices (ANMDMR) have scheduled new deliveries. Over 350,000 doses of one injectable vaccine are expected to be distributed this week, followed by 250,000 doses of the other product by the end of October.

In Mureș County, local pharmacists noted that only 20 percent of the estimated seasonal requirement has been received. Additionally, patients have reported difficulties accessing treatments for chronic illnesses. The state continues to provide full compensation for vaccines for children, pregnant women, and those over 65, while offering 50 percent compensation for healthy adults aged 45 to 65.
