CROSSFLOOD exercise in Suceava tests EU civil protection

The CROSSFLOOD civil protection exercise is currently taking place in Suceava, Romania, involving approximately 235 to 400 responders from several European nations, including Austria, Czechia, Estonia, France, and Ukraine. Funded by the European Union with nearly €1 million covering 90% of the costs, the drill tests responses to complex, multi-risk scenarios.

The simulation focuses on severe flooding in the Prut and Siret river basins, compounded by chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) contamination, as well as the presence of unexploded ordnance (UXO). Planned operations include water rescues using boats, large-capacity pumping, decontamination procedures, and mine clearance missions.

This initiative is part of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism and aligns with the Union's strategy to enhance preparedness for interconnected crises. The exercise will conclude with an evaluation to extract lessons for future emergency response operations.
