Romania increases diesel excise tax reduction to 25%

The Romanian Ministry of Finance has announced an increase in the temporary excise tax reduction for standard diesel, raising it from 20% to 25% for the period of September 1–15, 2026. This adjustment follows rising international market prices, specifically noting a 45.65% increase in Platts diesel quotations and a 25.45% rise in standard average prices.

The measure aims to protect consumer purchasing power and maintain economic stability by limiting the ripple effect of fuel costs on the transport, logistics, and consumer goods sectors. Under the new rate, the effective excise tax will drop to 2,103.22 lei per 1,000 liters, or 2,489.05 lei per ton.

Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare stated that the mechanism, established under Law no. 162/2026, is a calibrated and temporary intervention designed to reduce fiscal pressure. While the tax reduction is significant, the actual impact on pump prices will depend on international oil quotes, exchange rates, and the commercial policies of fuel distributors.
