Romania advocates for ambitious EU budget for 2028–2034
Romania is advocating for an ambitious European Union budget for the 2028–2034 Multiannual Financial Framework. Following a working meeting organized by President Nicușor Dan, the Romanian administration expressed its intent to support high levels of funding for Cohesion Policy and the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) to reduce development disparities and support rural communities.
Romania’s position also emphasizes the need for increased funding for European defense capabilities, particularly regarding the Eastern Flank and the Black Sea region, as well as policies to enhance competitiveness and reduce strategic dependencies in energy and advanced technologies.
In a related development, Ireland, holding the rotating EU presidency, presented a revised budget proposal for 2028–2034 that is approximately €140 billion lower than the European Commission’s initial draft. Meanwhile, a coalition of 17 countries from Southern and Eastern Europe, including Romania and known as the ‘Friends of Cohesion’, is calling for increased spending on agriculture and regional development.
