Romania to launch digital health platform and transition to electronic identity cards

Starting September 1, 2026, Romania will launch the ‘E-Sănătatea Mea’ digital platform, marking a significant step in the digitalization of the national healthcare system. Managed by the National Health Insurance House (CNAS), this portal will serve as a digital health wallet, allowing approximately 20 million potential users to access medical histories, prescriptions, referral slips, and records of services reimbursed by the public system in one centralized location.

As part of this transition, the new Electronic Identity Card (CEI) will gradually take over the functions of the current national health card. Horațiu-Remus Moldovan, President of CNAS, clarified that the transition will be gradual; existing health cards will remain valid and function in parallel with the new identity cards for a period to ensure continuity of care. The CEI will be used for patient identification and authentication within the system rather than serving as a storage device for medical history.

Additionally, the digital transformation aims to streamline medical processes for both patients and providers. Doctors will be able to access patient histories and referrals through a new integrated information system. The rollout is part of a broader modernization effort to align with European security standards and improve administrative efficiency within the healthcare sector.
