Romania tourism intensity lowest in EU, senator reports
Senator Petrișor Peiu has highlighted significant challenges facing the Romanian tourism sector, noting that Romania has the lowest tourism intensity in the European Union. Data indicates that residents spend an average of only 1.6 nights in accommodation per year, a figure significantly lower than in Latvia, Poland, or Hungary.
Financial constraints appear to be a primary driver, with 61.4% of Romanians unable to afford a vacation of at least one week per year. While 89% of Romanian tourist trips occur domestically, domestic tourism remains low relative to the population. Additionally, Romanians spent approximately 6.6 billion euros on foreign travel during the first eight months of the year, an amount roughly 3 billion euros higher than the spending brought in by foreign tourists visiting Romania.
