Romania tourism market faces economic polarization and shifting consumer habits

The Romanian tourism market is experiencing significant economic polarization. According to Eurostat data cited by the National Association of Travel Agencies (ANAT), 61.4% of Romanians can no longer afford a full week of vacation per year. This decline in purchasing power has led to a shift in consumer behavior, with many opting for shorter 4-5 day stays, city breaks, or traveling during the off-season to manage budgets.

To combat these economic challenges and extend the summer season, the “Litoralul pentru toți” (The Seaside for Everyone) program has returned for its 49th edition. The initiative features various accommodation offers across several seaside resorts, with minimum prices starting as low as 39 lei per person per night in Eforie Nord. Participating units include hotels and private owners offering reduced rates to attract budget-conscious travelers.

In a separate market development, Polish investment groups continue to acquire Romanian travel agencies. Recent transactions include the acquisition of Accent Travel by Warsaw-based eTravel, Rainbow Tours Polonia taking a 70% stake in Paralela 45, and Resource Partners acquiring an 80% stake in the online travel platform Vola.ro.
