Extreme weather hits Europe with wildfires and floods
Europe is currently facing a wave of extreme weather conditions, including devastating wildfires, heavy flooding, and severe storms, which have forced thousands of people to evacuate. According to the European Commission, the total area burned across the continent has exceeded 529,000 hectares since the beginning of the year, marking a 13 percent increase compared to the 2012–2025 average.
In Serbia, authorities have activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism to combat a massive fire in the Deliblatska Pescara nature reserve. Germany and Romania are providing significant assistance, including 124 firefighters, 39 vehicles, and four helicopters. Meanwhile, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a large wildfire near the Croatian border has forced the closure of the main highway connecting Trebinje to Dubrovnik and led to the evacuation of villages near Ivanica.
Spain is experiencing dual crises of fire and flood. In the Valencia region, over 1,000 residents in Gatova were evacuated due to a wildfire. Simultaneously, heavy rainfall in Tarragona has caused flooding, resulting in 11 injuries and significant disruptions to road and rail networks. In Poland, emergency services have responded to over 6,500 incidents related to storms and heavy rain, including the precautionary evacuation of 12 scout camps.
