Romania utility costs expected to rise amid energy price hikes

Utility costs in Romania are expected to rise in the coming months. Following a 25-30% increase in September driven by high electricity consumption during heatwaves, new price hikes are anticipated for electricity and gas.

Hidroelectrica has announced an increase in electricity prices, raising the rate from 45 bani to 51 bani per kW, which represents an approximate 7% impact on bills. There are expectations that other suppliers may follow suit, with final prices potentially approaching 2 lei per kW. Additionally, European gas quotations have reached their highest levels in nearly four years, though Romanian gas storage levels remain above the European average.

To manage rising costs, consumers are advised to prioritize essential payments such as food, transport, and utilities, and to monitor due dates to avoid penalties. The Romanian Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE) provides a platform for consumers to compare electricity provider tariffs, noting that switching suppliers is a free process that can be completed within 24 hours.
