Romania: Victor Ponta calls for defense contract renegotiation and dividend tax cuts

Former Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta has called for the termination and renegotiation of defense contracts he deems fraudulent, following a decision by the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR). Ponta suggests that these actions could save the state approximately 16 billion euros, which could be redirected toward defense needs such as drones and anti-drone systems rather than traditional equipment like tanks. He argued that current contracts favor foreign companies over domestic industry and urged for partnerships that prioritize local production.

In a separate political move, Ponta has appealed to the PSD and PNL parties to support a legislative project aimed at reducing the dividend tax. The proposal, which sought to return the tax rate to 8% from the current 16%, was recently rejected by the Senate. Ponta argued that lower dividend taxes encourage reinvestment and can actually increase state revenue by reducing tax evasion, citing the economic benefits seen when the rate was lowered to 5% in 2015.
