Romania warned of losing €60bn EU funds, says Victor Negrescu

Victor Negrescu, vice‑president of the European Parliament, told participants at the Transylvania EU Funds Day in Alba Iulia that Romania has contributed about €30 billion to the EU budget and received more than €100 billion in funding. He warned that the country could miss out on at least €60 billion of future EU money if it does not accelerate the absorption of funds from the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and the upcoming EU multi‑annual budget for 2028‑2034, which is expected to total around €2 trillion.

Negrescu stressed that the next budget will allocate roughly €60 billion to Romania and urged the government to prepare large‑scale, competitive projects, involve the private sector, and adopt the EU‑directed partnership plans. He criticised the politicisation of EU funds, saying “Romania cannot miss the last train of European money” and warned that any loss of funding could trigger political accountability. The event attracted over 400 officials, business leaders and EU representatives who discussed how to secure and effectively use the remaining European resources for the country’s development.
