Romania weather: Heavy rain, snow, and mountain road closures
Romania is experiencing a significant shift in weather conditions, characterized by a cooling trend and heavy precipitation across various regions. The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) has issued warnings for heavy rainfall in several counties, including Bucharest, Ilfov, Giurgiu, Teleorman, Călărași, Ialomița, Constanța, and Tulcea. In some areas, rainfall could reach 20–30 liters per square meter, with isolated amounts exceeding 40 liters.
In the mountainous regions, particularly the Southern and Eastern Carpathians, temperatures have dropped significantly. At altitudes above 1,700 meters, precipitation is falling as sleet and snow, leading to new snow layers of approximately 3–5 cm. Consequently, major alpine roads have been affected: the Transalpina was temporarily closed due to heavy snow, and the Transfăgărășan (DN 7C) has been closed between Piscul Negru and Bâlea Cascadă due to snow, fog, and low temperatures.
In the Dobrogea region, specifically Constanța, heavy rains have caused urban flooding and prompted RAJA SA to mobilize 28 intervention teams to manage sewage and water infrastructure. Additionally, a power failure near Medgidia has caused water supply disruptions in several localities, including Cernavodă and Mangalia. Long-term forecasts suggest temperatures will remain below seasonal averages through much of November.
