Romanian Administration in Timișoara Marks 107 Years Since 1919 Army Entry

On 3 August 1919 the Romanian Army entered Timișoara, formally confirming the Banat region’s union with Romania after two centuries of Austro‑Hungarian rule. The arrival, led by Colonel Virgil Economu and welcomed by Prefect Dr Aurel Cosma, was celebrated by a crowd of over 100 000 locals.

The event inaugurated a new era of Romanian governance that reshaped the city’s architecture, education, health and industry. Key milestones include the construction of the Metropolitan Cathedral (begun 1936, inaugurated after WWII), the founding of the Polytechnic School in 1920 by royal decree, and the later development of several universities, hospitals and industrial plants that turned Timișoara into a major western Romanian centre.

Over the subsequent 107 years the city’s landscape transformed with emblematic public buildings, churches of various denominations, and a thriving industrial sector, reflecting the lasting impact of the 1919 administrative change.
