Romanian Agriculture Ministry initiates joint water‑resource plan for irrigation

On 5 August 2026, vice‑premier Tánczos Barna and the interim agriculture minister convened a working meeting at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR) with representatives of the National Agency for Land Improvement and the National Administration “Romanian Waters”, led by State Secretary Emil Dumitru. The session focused on analysing the current hydrological situation, water availability for irrigation, the operation of irrigation systems and the drought conditions affecting Romanian agriculture.

Emil Dumitru stressed the need for accurate, continuous information for farmers so they can plan their activities according to real‑time water conditions. The agencies presented the latest hydrological data and proposed a comprehensive inventory of all water sources that could be used for irrigation. Participants agreed to form a joint working group that will draft a common set of measures, including the water‑source inventory and an analysis of irrigation requests submitted by water‑users organisations. The initiative aims to provide immediate solutions for drought‑affected areas while establishing long‑term improvements to Romania’s irrigation infrastructure in the context of climate change.
