Romania intensifies air defense amid drone incursions
Romania is intensifying its air defense readiness on NATO's eastern flank following multiple drone incursions near the Ukrainian border. Interim Defense Minister Radu Miruță stated that the military has adapted its tactics to counter evolving Russian drone technology, noting that the Romanian Air Force has successfully intercepted several drones in recent weeks.
During recent exercises at Borcea Air Base, Romanian F-16 pilots demonstrated the ability to scramble and be ready for intervention within 15 minutes. The nation's 67 F-16 aircraft are currently a primary platform for air policing and sovereignty missions. Miruță emphasized that while the military responds to individual incursions, a massive simultaneous swarm of drones would constitute a shift from peacetime to wartime operations.
On August 8, 2026, an aerial target was detected by radar near the river border with Ukraine, triggering RO-Alert warnings in Tulcea county. Although the target did not enter Romanian airspace, the incident underscored the ongoing regional tensions. International allies, including NATO commanders, have reportedly praised the professionalism of Romanian pilots involved in these defensive missions.
