Romanian and Moldovan police issue safety warnings for wet roads

Authorities in Romania and Moldova are urging increased caution on roads due to hazardous driving conditions caused by rain and reduced visibility.

In Romania, the Police have warned that many drivers fail to adapt their speed and following distances to wet surfaces. A survey of 1,000 European drivers conducted by Apollo Tyres revealed that 54% underestimate or are unaware of safe stopping distances on wet roads, with only 24% recognizing that the distance should be doubled. Experts warn that sudden braking or sharp steering can lead to aquaplaning, where a film of water prevents tires from maintaining contact with the asphalt.

In Moldova, the National Inspectorate for Public Security (INSP) reported a rise in serious accidents involving pedestrians, some resulting in fatalities. Approximately 60% of these incidents occur in designated pedestrian areas, such as crossings or sidewalks. Officials advise drivers to adjust speeds for visibility and pedestrians to wear reflective clothing and avoid using mobile phones or headphones while crossing streets.
