European power grids prepare for solar eclipse generation dip

The solar eclipse on August 12, 2026, is expected to cause a significant, temporary reduction in photovoltaic power generation across Europe. ENTSO-E estimates that solar output could drop by up to 9.7 GW during the period between 19:15 and 21:30 CEST, provided there are clear skies.

Spain and Germany are projected to face the most substantial impacts on solar energy production. In Spain, where a total eclipse will be visible, Red Eléctrica anticipates a potential reduction of up to 5 gigawatts. To maintain grid stability, European operators have activated a dedicated task force to monitor the situation, coordinate preparations, and share information.

Preventative measures include briefing control room operators, warning market participants, and avoiding planned maintenance or outages to maximize operational flexibility. While the event presents a technical challenge for balancing supply and demand, the European Commission does not anticipate any significant threat to the overall security of the electricity supply.
