Romanian automotive sales and parts turnover up 1.9% in Jan‑May 2026

The National Institute of Statistics reported that the gross turnover of wholesale and retail trade, maintenance and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles rose by 1.9% (adjusted for working days and seasonality) in the January‑May period of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025. Growth was driven mainly by vehicle sales, which increased 1.4%, and by sales of auto parts and accessories, up 1.2%. By contrast, motorcycle trade and repairs fell 17.4% and vehicle maintenance and repair activities declined 1.3%.

In May alone, turnover rose 4.5% over April (gross series). The strongest monthly increases were recorded in motorcycle trade and repairs (+20.7%), auto parts and accessories (+5.1%), vehicle trade (+4.1%) and vehicle maintenance and repair (+3.1%). Year‑on‑year, the sector’s turnover was 1.5% higher (gross) and 2% higher (seasonally adjusted) than in May 2025, supported by a 3.9% rise in vehicle trade and a 0.6% rise in auto parts trade.
