Romanian Black Sea coast undergoes beach changes and new aquarium project

The Romanian Black Sea coast is undergoing significant changes due to beach nourishment projects and new infrastructure developments. Recent efforts to widen beaches by bringing in large quantities of sand have altered the seabed and coastal water circulation. This modification has created complex underwater topography, including sandbanks and channels, which can trigger dangerous rip currents. These currents, which act like underwater rivers pulling water away from the shore, can appear in deceptively calm areas, posing a risk to swimmers.

In a separate development for the region, the Constanța County Council, in partnership with the Constanța County Destination Management Organization, has announced a 23 million euro project to build a new aquarium. Located at the Constanța Natural Sciences Museum Complex in the Mamaia area, the facility is expected to be the largest in the Balkan region. The project, funded through the South-East Regional Program 2021–2027, is scheduled for completion by December 2029. The aquarium will feature underwater tunnels, habitats for penguins, and dedicated basins for the Black Sea and the global ocean, serving as a hub for tourism, education, and marine research.
