Romanian Cities Adjust Public Transport Fares

Local authorities in Romania have announced contrasting changes to public transport pricing. Starting 1 August, the city of Arad will charge a flat 1 leu for a 24‑hour ticket on buses and trams, a reduction from the previous 4.5 lei price, and will keep its "Green Friday" program offering free rides on Fridays. Arad’s transport director Claudiu Godja highlighted the move as a way to curb car use and pollution, with support from Mayor Călin Bibarț.

In the neighbouring Alba County, the regional council is proposing fare increases of up to 19 % on three inter‑city bus routes operated by Livio Dario SRL. The new tariffs, based on higher fuel, electricity, salary and tax costs, would raise the per‑kilometre price from 0.79 lei to 0.92 lei on the Alba‑Zlatna line, from 0.85 lei to 1.01 lei on the Alba‑Acmariu line, and from 0.56 lei to 0.64 lei on the Alba‑Blaj line, pending final council approval.
