Romanian court presidents condemn new public‑sector salary law

Presidents of Romania’s tribunals and courts of appeal issued joint statements denouncing a draft law that would overhaul the salary system for public‑sector employees. They described the proposal as an "unprecedented attack" on the integrity and stability of the Romanian state, accusing the government of attempting to de‑professionalise the judiciary and promote "dictatorial conduct."

The judges warned that the bill could create salary anomalies, lower remuneration for some officials, and breach constitutional principles of equality. They also cited concerns over pension categories for magistrates and urged the use of all legal means to defend judicial independence.

The criticism was directed at the interim labour minister of the dismissed government and highlighted broader economic deficiencies that the law allegedly seeks to mask.
