Romanian cultural and academic summer universities convene
Several cultural and academic events focused on Romanian identity and heritage took place in mid-August 2026.
The 23rd edition of the Izvoru Mureșului Summer University was held in Covasna under the theme ‘Geopolitics of National Identity’. Discussions addressed the rights of the Romanian minority in Ukraine, specifically regarding education in their mother tongue and religious life, as well as the situation of Romanians in the Carpathian Arc regions of Covasna, Harghita, and Mureș. Eugen Popescu, President of the National Foundation for Romanians Everywhere, emphasized the need for rights for Romanians in Ukraine similar to those granted to Ukrainian communities in Romania.
Simultaneously, the 73rd edition of the Nicolae Iorga Popular University summer courses commenced in Vălenii de Munte. This traditional event, which brings together academics and public figures from both sides of the Prut River, focuses on Romanian history, science, and culture. Notable participants include academician Valeriu Matei and analyst Dan Dungaciu. The institution, originally founded by Nicolae Iorga in 1908, serves to promote national identity and culture.
