Otopeni Customs Office: Nearly 700,000 euros disappear from storage

Nearly 700,000 euros disappeared from a storage area at the Otopeni Border Customs Office at Henri Coandă International Airport. The funds had been seized on January 9, 2026, from a passenger arriving from Dubai during a customs inspection.

The theft was discovered when authorities attempted to return the money following a court order to close the case. Upon inspecting the storage bag, officials found only a single banknote and bundles of paper used to simulate the original volume.

The Romanian Customs Authority has launched an internal investigation to determine if proper procedures for recording banknote serial numbers and maintaining inventory were followed. The investigation is also examining who had access to the storage room, which notably lacked a video surveillance system, although the access corridor was monitored. The police have been notified and are conducting a criminal investigation into the disappearance.
