Romanian doctors' strike suspended after securing hiring and salary concessions

The Sanitas health workers' union announced on Friday that the general strike by doctors and other medical staff was suspended after three days of partial shutdown in roughly 500 hospitals. The suspension follows a series of victories, including a court decision recognizing the union as a social dialogue partner, the unlocking of more than 6,800 previously blocked positions, and the acknowledgment by the interim government that over 40% of health employees would face salary losses under the current remuneration law. Parliament also approved an amendment allowing new hires in the health system.

Sanitas officials warned that the strike is not ended and will resume if a new wage law is passed in a form that continues to reduce incomes. Union leaders such as Vice‑President Răzvan Gae and executive president Mircea Ciocan emphasized that the next step is continued dialogue with Parliament to draft a fairer salary law.
