The National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE) has proposed a new gas tariff of 18.80 lei per cubic metre without VAT, which would translate to a final consumer price of about 20.30 lei per cubic metre with VAT. Opposition parties and civil society groups have organized several protests, notably on 28 July 2026 in front of the Parliament, demanding the resignation of Energocom’s director, criminal investigations into the tariff increase, and the calling of early parliamentary elections.

The Platforma Demnitate și Adevăr (DA) has called for a state of emergency in the energy sector, accusing the government of calculating the new tariff on forecasts rather than on actual procurement costs. DA alleges that the purchase price of gas is roughly €623 per 1,000 cubic metres, which should cap the tariff at 17.44 lei per cubic metre. It also claims that a 1 % deviation in procurement costs – about 80 million lei – was already reached in May–June, yet Energocom did not initiate the required adjustment procedure.

Protesters have repeatedly urged that the tariff calculation be transparent, that Energocom be held accountable, and that the government adopt measures to protect consumers from soaring energy bills.
