Romanian Energy Minister Says No Household Blackouts Amid Power Outages

Romanian energy minister Cristian Bușoi told reporters that domestic electricity generation – from coal, gas, solar and wind plants – remains sufficient to meet household demand, and there is no scenario in which residents will lose power because of the drought‑driven energy shortfall. He said the sporadic outages currently observed are linked to problems in the distribution network, such as overload, vegetation fires and ageing equipment, rather than a lack of available electricity.

Bușoi warned that the reduced production capacity in neighbouring Hungary, where output has fallen by almost half, could lead to higher prices and the possible disconnection of industrial consumers. Romania has declared a national energy‑crisis state for August as river flows, including the Danube, stay low. He urged households to permit Transelectrica crews to clear vegetation and repair damaged lines, and called on both industry and consumers to use energy more sparingly.
