Romanian experts discuss optimal dinner time for weight loss

Recent nutrition research emphasizes that the timing of the last main meal can affect metabolism, sleep quality and calorie burning. Specialists note that while total daily calories remain the primary factor for weight control, eating earlier in the evening—typically two to three hours before bedtime—aligns better with the body’s circadian rhythm. Recommendations suggest a dinner window between 17:00‑19:00 for those who go to sleep around 22:30‑23:00, or between 19:00‑20:00 for a slightly later schedule. Late‑night meals are associated with slower digestion, higher overnight glucose, reflux symptoms and reduced sleep quality, and may contribute to modest weight‑gain differences of about 60 kcal per day in studies.

An Australian‑New Zealand study of 287 women further linked a nocturnal chronotype to higher body‑fat percentage, abdominal fat, elevated blood glucose and lipid levels. Women who ate most of their calories after 20:00 showed poorer metabolic profiles compared to early‑type peers. Researchers suggest limiting late‑night eating as a practical strategy to improve metabolic health for night‑active individuals.
