Romanian consumers urged to curb impulse purchases with 24‑hour rule

A simple psychological technique called the “24‑hour rule” is promoted as a way for shoppers to avoid impulsive, non‑essential purchases. The method advises waiting a full day before completing a purchase, allowing dopamine‑driven excitement to subside and giving the brain time to evaluate the true need for the item. By pausing, consumers can ask themselves whether they already own a similar product, how the cost compares to their earnings, and whether the item will improve their life in the long term.

Psychologists also warn that compulsive buying, or oniomania, can develop into a behavioral addiction. Although not listed as a distinct diagnosis in the DSM‑5, it is characterized by an uncontrollable urge to shop, frequent overspending, accumulation of unused items, and negative financial and personal consequences. Triggers include advertising, social‑media posts, and emotional states such as anxiety or sadness. Recognizing the signs and applying strategies like the 24‑hour rule can help individuals regain control over their spending habits.
