Romanian films prepare for international releases and Oscar campaigns

Romanian cinema is seeing significant international activity with two major film releases. Cristian Mungiu’s new film, ‘Fjord’, which serves as Romania’s official Oscar submission, is scheduled for a national premiere in Romania on January 15, 2027. Ahead of this, a special screening will take place on October 24 as part of the ‘Les Films de Cannes à Bucarest’ festival. The film’s international campaign and U.S. theatrical release, distributed by Neon, is set for October 9, targeting multiple Academy Award categories including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor/Actress.

Separately, the film ‘The Yellow Tie’ (Cravata Galbenă), which explores the life of the renowned Romanian conductor Sergiu Celibidache, is launching in United Kingdom cinemas on October 9. To mark the release, director Serge Ioan Celebidachi and producer Adela Vrînceanu Celebidachi will participate in a discussion at the Romanian Cultural Institute in London to discuss the complexities of bringing the conductor’s artistic legacy to the screen.
